Thinking Blue!!!

Well, folks it looks like the cosmos were not fooled by my attempts to outsmart them. Even though I refused to actually dedicate a single spot for my Veggies, my Little Patch of Oklahoma Prairie Paradise is flooding. With any luck the soil I garden in is better drained at my current location. We've moved since the first time my Veggie Garden floated away and perhaps my little seedlings aren't drowning out back. The upside of all this rain is that if the plants in the ground survive, it will be a lush, beautiful spring!

As plants aren't the only thing I love to nurture and grow; It's time I introduce my followers to another of the greatest loves of my life. My family of course, the sprouts I started just a little over 23 yrs ago with the birth of my First Future Goddess, all told I have Three Goddesses in Training myself!

To add to our joy, we found out earlier this week that our firstborn daughter's little sprout is going to be a Bouncing Baby BOY.

So, while I could be thinking blue because it's raining on my "parade"...it's really because I have a Grandson on the way!!!

~~~flashback warning~~~
The Gardening Goddess is sitting on the veranda sipping her first glass of vino and watching the birds flit playfully through her expansive gardens....OK, who am I kidding...I'm inside wating on Martha Freakin Stewart and The Moon Goddess, listening to the dog whine at the window I had to open because I stunk up the house with the oven while whipping up a culinary Italian masterpiece for my friends (well a frozen Lasagna)...but I am cooking and in the loosly plagerized words of the most famous Southern Belle ever to grace the Imaginary South...We shall nevah go hungry (tonight)!!!
OK, that post comes from a calmer simpler time, well, from a couple of weeks ago anyway, before it was really warm enough to get much in the ground and I still had time to wreak havoc with a simple last minute text message to a couple of my dearest friends. Now and until school is out my life pretty much belongs to my youngest daughter's soccer games, and as a Mom I wouldn't have it any other way! Throw in that my middle daughter graduates from college tonight, and I'm hosting a graduation celebration for her on Sunday afternoon...I am the keeper of Easter for both sides of the family, I. E., big gathering at our house last Sunday...and I'm trying like crazy to get as much as possible in the ground before Oklahoma heats up and stays that way and folks that doesn't take long...and I think I'm feeling a bit stressed! Fortunately, my oldest daughter somehow inherited "Auntie Martha's" love for cooking and will be a big help with getting food ready for her sister's party!!!
Fortunately, if you're me and gardening is your passion, as well as, the best stress reliever you know, lost should get accomplished in my back yard today. That is if I don't get rained out. I'm not about to complain about the rain, however, considering we've had one of the driest winters and early springs I can remember. I'll end this post with a nice little continuation of my flashback and you guys can see exactly why Martha Freakin Stewart got her name!
~~~warning, returning to flashback mode~~~

Unlike my veranda sitting friend, I spent most of the entire day outside working hard and have the sunburned shoulders and aching back to prove it! I'm not planting much yet due to the freeze warnings for next week but I did get lots of ugly weeds cleared out, created a couple of beds and then came in and made homemade spicy chicken soup. (Saute diced onion and carrots in olive oil, add 2 cups water and 2 chicken bouillion cubes,cover and simmer til the carrots are tender, add cubed leftover baked chicken, sliced canned potatoes, kitchen sliced green beans and rotel tomotoes. Simmer for a few minutes then serve in a shallow bowl with a double pinch of mozarella cheese on top.)Dave and I headed to town and followed Granny Opal's directions digging up several small shrubs from her yard. It's so funny how that works because she gave me FOUR barberry and I was planning to go buy three new ones this week! She also gave me two photenia which I needed to fill in some gaps. (Sorry Queenie- I got there first)Dave and I had a great time with Granny and heard all kinds of fun stories about times both old and new from her. She is one of the most fascinating people I know. The hand me down shrubs are now planted and watered in, my boston ferns are tucked into safe spots on the front porch and I'm ready for the next winter blast predicted to come in next week.Signing off for now... Yours, Martha Freakin Stewart

Hey Gardening Goddess Friends and the few Gardening Guys who may wander onto this blog,

Welcome!!! It's been a busy, busy, busy week in my little section of Oklahoma Prairie Paradise. I've been so busy trying to actually grow vegetables, that I haven't had time to post anything. The tomato and strawberry plants are in the ground! Along with lettuce, carrot, radish, cucumber and sweet pea seeds. The "Salad Bowls" (2 large clay pots planted with salad veggies) have already sprouted and are filled with the cutest little lettuce, baby carrot and radish seedlings. I've also replanted my herb garden (plant in full sun and once established be careful not to over water, think weeds, as many herbs once established need very little care). The old herb bed had pretty much played out as the beautiful Crepe Myrtle and Granny Opal's Canna's have become well established.

I'm growing many things from seed this year for the first time in a long time and am remembering why I started buying so many bedding plants. In order for seeds to germinate you have to water, well, pretty much daily. If the soil drys out, you may be sunk. The Oklahoma wind makes growing from seed challenging to say the least and sometimes I think there's a vortex in my back yard that just sucks an extra portion of wind through here. I have my theories on why Oklahoma is so windy, but I'll be nice to my Texas neighbors...at least for today (BOOMER SOONER)...OK, I can only be so nice where Texas is concerned.

I may have commited a slight faux pax on Facebook where the veggie garden contest is taking place. I told a boy he could enter the contest, oops. Since he's an honerary GF and I've always been one of the guys anyway, I think it will balance out. He has a great sence of humor and I'm sure he will be great in the veggie trash talking portion of the contest, not to mention he has some of the cutest little future gardeners you've ever seen, the most recent one of which arrived just yesterday!!!, so the pics will be fun too!

All for now my Gardening Goddess Girls and the few Gardening Guys (yeah, still no way I'm refering to any of you guys as Gardening Gods),

Till next time,

The Gardening Goddess

ps...as soon as I figure out how to post pics on the blog you'll be seeing plenty of my little patch of Oklahoma Prairie Paradise!!!

With any luck Oklahoma gardeners have experienced the last freeze of the season! Someone ever managed to turn off the wind machine today!! The cavaly has arrived to help me prepare my veggie beds!!! And life is good!!!!

I'm currently involved in a vegetable gardening contest with all of my favorite Gardening Goddess Girlfriends. BTW, You make one innocent little comment on your friends Facebook page and you find yourself planting vegatables for the, umm, third time in your life and searching for a human scarecrow. I already asked my Handsome Hubby to be the scarecrow, but he absolutly refuses to pose in the back yard wearing a thong. Oops I see the problem now, I meant thongs(flipflops), poor guy.

I talk alot of smack on FB about how I will be crowned the gardening Queen when this friendly little competition is over. So I'll just share that...The first time I tried my hand at growing veggies we had a flood in my little portion of Oklahoma Prarie Paradise. My garden was completely washed out, I had corn popping up in the middle of the yard, and found radishes in some of the oddest places. The second time I planted a vegetable patch I kept it small. My thinking being I couldn't wreak too much havoc with a few tomatoe plants and some squash. We had a drought that year. I got about three ripe tomatoes, half a dozen squash, and a bumper crop of green tomatoes. This year I'm trying to fool the cosmos by not actually planting a "vegetable garden", but by plopping my vegetables in amongst the flowers I grow in abundance with a passion. But still, I'm appologizing in advance for the probably locust plague that will occur in our area once my veggies get growing.

PS...I think my innocent FB comment was something along the lines of...If they weren't afraid to let a Master Gardener in on the contest I would win it hands down...please don't tell them I don't know nuthin bout growin no vegetables...

Till Next Time,

The Gardening Goddess
